Principal Planner / Senior Project Manager 07 November 2018

Waldrop Engineering is seeking a Principal Planner with AICP certification and a master’s degree in Urban and Regional Planning, Landscape Architecture, or related field for our Bonita Springs office. As a Principal Planner, you will be involved in all aspects of the planning and project management process, including the preparation and processing of complex land use petitions for private sector clientele, the preparation and processing of a variety of planning studies and regulatory tools for local governments, due diligence analysis, providing planning support to Waldrop’s Civil Engineering and Landscape Architecture Departments, maintain client and agency relationships, and execute public presentations for successful project completion

The Principal Planner/Senior Project Manager supervises and participates in advanced, highly complex professional planning activities. This position reports directly to, and advises the Vice President of Planning on all planning-related matters. The role also requires the ability to market Waldrop’s services to new and existing clientele, and participate in local boards and organizations to further promote awareness of the company on a regional basis.

Waldrop Engineering is a diverse land development consulting firm providing civil engineering, planning, and landscape architecture services for a wide array of projects including master planned residential communities, golf course & destination resort communities, community parks, commercial & industrial developments, and master surface water management systems.

Job Description and Functions:

  • Performs and manages complex and politically sensitive professional planning projects, research and analysis
  • Directs and performs the preparation of land use petitions, reports, analyses on behalf of private and public-sector clientele. Example projects include: comprehensive plan amendments, annexations, rezonings, special exceptions, variances, Land Development Code amendments, land use studies and due diligence analysis
  • Manages project teams for the delivery of planning petitions, including the coordination of civil engineers, landscape architects, transportation consultant, environmental consultant, land surveyor and other sub-consultants, as required by the project
  • Monitors and ensures compliance of projects with local, state and federal laws
  • Responsible for the preparation and delivery of professional planning presentations and expert witness testimony to the public, advisory and recommending boards and agencies, city
    councils, and county commissions
  • Assigns work to planning staff under the direction of the Vice President of Planning, and ensures the completion of tasks
  • Participates in proposal preparation, manages project schedules, and monitors and controls expenditures
  • Assists the Executive team with marketing of planning services to a variety of public and private sector clientele
  • Attends evening public hearings, neighborhood meetings, planning workshops, and networking events

The Applicant must demonstrate the following knowledge/background:

  • Thorough knowledge of urban planning, land development processes, and local government policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of local government procedures and practices
  • Methods and techniques of effective presentations and technical report preparation
  • Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations, including recent legislative changes
  • Recent developments, current literature and sources of information related to municipal planning and administration in the Southwest Florida region.
  • Citizen involvement techniques and consensus-building processes
  • Budgeting procedures and techniques
  • Knowledge of computer hardware and software programs, which may include Microsoft Office (including PowerPoint), Microsoft Project, GIS databases, and Adobe Acrobat.

  • Must be hard working, resourceful, detail-oriented, experienced in highly visible/controversial projects
  • Must be able to work independently and develop solutions to issues that arise during the planning process
  • Strong interpersonal skills to develop good working relationships with Waldrop Team, clients, government staff
  • Able to work with a team on the execution of projects and deliverables
  • Capable of managing multiple, high-priority assignments
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret research data for reports and apply mathematic techniques in practical situations
  • Reading comprehension to understand technical and legal materials
  • Ability to work on several projects or issues simultaneously
  • Ability to manage projects effectively in terms of budget and deadlines

Minimum Qualifications:
The Principal Planner/Senior Project Manager must possess a master’s degree in urban and regional planning, or a closely related field, eight (8) years of experience in the planning profession. Public hearing experience is required. AICP certification and supervisory experience is preferred, but not required.
